Indian Wars-Era U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Infantry Rifle, with Bayonet, #448071, .45-70 Gov't. CF cal., 32.6" barrel marked "V/P/(eaglehead)/P" and "A" at breech, Buffington long-range rear sight marked "R"; trapdoor marked "U.S./Model/1873" (correct thru early 1887 prod'n.); lockplate, ramrod, fittings and markings are standard M-1884, as is the long-comb stock. Mfg'd 1886-87. Condition is very good retaining approx. 70% darkening original barrel/lock blue, discoloration and erosion to trigger guard and buttplate, good edges and markings. Stock is sound showing scattered marks of age and military use, lacks left-side inspector cartouche. Action is crisp, bore shows frosting and light etching, good rifling. Bayonet shows scattered beginning rust. Ensemble will greatly benefit from a sympathetic cleaning. Est.: $600-$800. (Antique)
