Indian War Era Sharps New Model Carbine with Metallic Cartridge Conversion
This is an example of a Sharps New Model carbine converted under Ordnance Department contract by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company to the caliber .50-70 center fire cartridge in 1867. The carbine has the original six-groove barrel and is fitted with the standard Lawrence folding leaf rear sight graduated to 800 yards. The rear of the barrel has a faint "NE" visible and an "F" on the left rear at the breech. The serial number is located on the upper tang. The left side of the receiver is stamped with the two-line Sharps 1848 patent date and the lock is stamped with the two-line Sharps 1852 patent date and the two-line R.S. Lawrence 1859 patent date. The left center of the stock is marked with the correct "DFC" ribbon cartouche.

Condition: Fine as arsenal refurbished with 70% of the faded blue finish remaining on the barrel with areas thinning to smooth plum and gray patina. The remaining surfaces have a smooth mottled gray patina. The front sight blade is a period replacement. The wood is very good with some touched up varnish on the right side at the butt and overall some minor dings, dents and scratches. Unless noted above, the markings are clear. The action is excellent.
