Important and historic French Napoleonic honor musket, model 1777/AN9, lock marked "Manuf 're A Versailles" and "Boutet" on barrel. With inscribed silver plaque which reads, "From the First Consul to CitizenVinot, chasseur in the 9th Demi Brigade of Light Infantry, at the Battle of Marengo, where this soldier having been attacked by two Austrian cavalrymen and a Hungarian grenadier, dismounted one of the cavalrymen,put the grenadier out of action with a bayonet thrust and forced the other cavalryman to withdraw from the battlefield, a rifle of honor. / Battle of Marengo". Hallmarked sterling silver and plated mounts. This action was one of the most important of the Napoleonic wars and was key to Napoleon's success. The musket measures 52-3/4" overall, the barrel has been reduced to 38" and is its original .69 calibersmoothbore. There is a duffel bag cut under the band and was probably brought back as a war trophy.
