This is an Officer's Victorian era 1871 pattern helmet of the Royal Horse Guards. The skull and peaks are of German silver. The front and rear peaks are edged with gilt metal and the front peak is lined with black skived leather. There is a gilt laurel leaf and oak leaf band across the top of the front peak and another scallop shell band running from the top of the skull to the bottom of the rear peak. The helmet plate is a diamond cut 8 pointed silvered star. On top of the star is a gilt metal elliptical shaped garter with the motto "HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE" backed with translucent blue enamel and a cross with a red translucent enamel background. A red yaks hair plume hangs from the gilt and silver fluted plume holder with an eight pointed star base. There is a large gilt Tudor rose at the top of the plume. Tudor rose ear bosses suspend a gilded chin chain backed by leather. Lined with a smooth brown leather. With metal plume tin with brass plaque inscribed "J.B. Kitson./Royal Horse Guards." in script. With tan leather helmet cover stamped "RHG/258/3/36" in ink.

Condition: Fine, the skull and peaks retain thinned aged German silver. There are scattered light dents on the skull and peaks. The other gilt components show minor wear. The plume has some noticeably shorter hairs at the top. The lining is good. Plume tin is very good with 90% black finish. Helmet cover is good with minor wear. Fine, identified 1871 pattern Horse Guard Officer's helmet.
