Hudson Bay White Heart & Chevron Beaded Necklace
Featured in this lot is this Hudson Bay Red White Heart and Multi Layered Chevron beaded necklace. These 1600-1800’s beads are regularly referred to as “white hearts” due to the opaque white core at the “heart” or center of each bead that is finished with a red semi-translucent outer shell (showing the white partially through). Chevrons beads are made by a multi-part process. They start with the making of the cane, then another color glass is added and then this is usually put into a 12 point star mold. This process is repeated for each additional layer on the bead. Chevron beads, also called "Rosetta"and "Star" beads have been made Venice since the late 1400's and are still in limited production today. The Venetian Chevron production with the highest volume of beads was in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Chevron beads have been traded throughout the world, but most heavily in Africa. The Dutch traders were the first to bring Chevron beads to Africa in the late 1400's. The chevron beads show layers of red, blue and yellow. The top of the necklace shows 29 consecutive Hudson Bay Red White Heart beads strung together. Further down the necklace there is a Chevron bead followed by one Hudson Bay bead and so on to the bottom of the necklace where there are two Hudson Bay beads. The necklace shows good condition overall with no signs of obvious damage. The Chevron beads measure 1/2" L x 3/16" W, while the Hudson Bay beads measure 1/8" L x 3/16" W. The necklace from clasp to clasp measures 17" L.
