The lot features a set of original polychrome painted cottonwood kachina’s from the Hopi Pueblo Native American Indians dating to circa 1900-1940’s. The first example is a Cloud Kachina which has a cottonwood carved construction and early polychrome multi-colored painted finish. The piece has a period correct early 1900’s trading post tag which reads, “FROM THE HOPI VILLAGES” and has a nice original patina. The other is also an early 1900’s example is a Hopi Situlili Snake Racer Kachina. (These are also referred to as Katsina’s). Both show square hands, round oval heads and curved feet. These are wonderful early examples having overall good condition. One is marked on the bottom with a Hopi symbol and “CLOUD”. Provenance: From a large American Indian collection in Billings, Montana. The first measures 7.75”H x 2.75”W x 1 7/8”D. The second measures 7.5”H x 3.5”W x 2.25”D.
