Hollywood Canteen Original Certificate Of Appreciation For Sammy Cahn (1944)
Hollywood Canteen Original Certificate Of Appreciation For Sammy Cahn (1944) From 1942 to 1945 the "Hollywood Canteen" operated right smack in the middle of Hollywood as a club offering food, dancing, music and entertainment for all military service men and women. Virtually everyone from the Hollywood community (over 3000 stars, directors, studio executives, and assorted studio crafts people) volunteered. But of course the big attraction for the military was to come in and see their favorite stars serving them food, talking with them, performing for them, and giving them a dance or two. So popular was the Canteen that in 1944 Warner Brothers even made a movie based on it. It was the brainchild of Bette Davis, who served as its president and mover and shaker through its entire term. This is an actual 1940's "Certificate of Appreciation" that was given out to the Hollywood special volunteers'. This was made for the legendary songwriter Sammy Cahn for his participation at the Canteen, creating special songs, and performing throughout the war years. It is signed by Bette Davis (however the signature is part of the actual certificate). This rare original certificate was in the personal procession of Sammy Chan and was displayed at his Songwriter's Hall of Fame Museum in New York. A rare piece of both Hollywood and WW II memorabilia. Certificate is 11"x8.5".
