This pistol is a Model 1911A1 Automatic Pistol that was manufactured by Remington Rand, Inc., in 1944. It has a gray-green parkerized finish with blued High Standard (HS) barrel and Keys Fibre Co., stocks with large reinforcing rings. The pistol is complete with a blued M. S. Little Mfg. Co. (L on floorplate) magazine. The narrow spur hammer has well defined bordered knurling, the safety lock has impressed checkering and the slide stop is serrated. The stamped trigger has a blue finish. The original checkered or grooved mainspring housing has been replaced with a parkerized Model 1911 mainspring housing. The receiver feed ramp is bright. The proof marks, Ordnance escutcheon, final inspection marks and serial number were all stamped after the pistol was parkerized and show traces of bright finish. The right side of the frame is stamped with the Ordnance escutcheon behind the grip. "UNITED STATES PROPERTY/NO. 1484476" is stamped behind the slide stop hole and "M 1911 A1 U.S. ARMY" is stamped in front of it. "6" is stamped on the left side of the trigger guard bow and the "FJA" Ordnance final inspection mark is stamped below the slide stop cut out. A "P" proof mark is stamped below the magazine release. "P" is stamped inside the frame barrel channel and a "G" is stamped on the top of the frame to the right of the disconnector hole. The left side of the slide is stamped with the third pattern, one-inch, markings: "REMINGTON RAND, INC./SYRACUSE, N.Y. U.S.A." in two lines. A "P" proof mark is stamped on the top of the slide ahead of the rear sight. The pistol is accompanied by a russet leather M3 Shoulder Holster marked: "USMC/BOYT/43" in three lines on the back. This pistol was carried during WWII by Robert Shaffer USMC. A letter from Shaffer with the pistol states he was given the pistol by a Navy officer from the 3rd Joint Assault Signal Company on Guam. During WWII, Shaffer served as a Marine Officer on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Hornet (CV-8) during the Doolittle Raid on Japan on April 18, 1942 and at the Battle of Midway in June 1942.
