Made in 1903. Fixed sights, with the 2 line Hartford address on top of the barrel and "COLT." on the left side, 2-line patent dates and circled Rampant Colt on the frame, and matching numbers on the frame and grip straps. The back strap is inscribed 'SHERIFF W.E. "WILD BILL" SUTTER", with "POWDER RIVER CO. MONT." on the butt. Two piece grips with 12 notches in the butt. Research shows that William E. Sutter was a Montana rancher who first got involved in law enforcement as a Livestock Detective, and later Deputy Sheriff in Custer County. When the Powder River County was established in 1919, Sutter was appointed it's first Sheriff and served to 1922. Afterward, Sutter performed additional ranching and inspection work, eventually becoming Chief Inspector of the Montana Livestock Commission. Sutter's nickname arose from an incident where a local drunk claimed Bill used a bear as a mount to chase down a wild horse.
