Historic Documented Cased Naval Presentation Whitney Second Model Navy Revolver with Relief Carved Pearl Grips Formerly of the W.M. Locke Collection

Whitney Second Model Navy revolver manufactured c.1863. The revolver has single letter Ordnance sub-inspection marks stamped on the barrel, frame, cylinder and trigger guard. The serial number, "19114" is stamped on the top of the loading lever; no other serial numbers are visible. The Whitney markings have been removed from the top strap. Other than the Ordnance sub-inspection marks, no markings remain on the cylinder. The top barrel flat is stamped with the block letter presentation: "PRESENTED BY JOHN CAMPBELL ESQ. AND FRIENDS OF PHILADELPHIA". The upper right barrel flat is stamped with the block letter inscription: "TO CAPTn WILLIAM THOMSON. S.S. "DELAWARE" and the lower right barrel flat is inscribed "FEBY 1867". The revolver has two-piece pearl grips. Both grips are relief carved with a dove carrying a flower in it's beak on the base of each grip with leaf borders on either side. The cosigner notes state that that the carving represents a 'Noah's Ark Dove' with an olive branch that symbolizes "peace and a new beginning after the Civil War's end". The S.S. Delaware was a 357 ton paddle wheel gunboat that mounted three guns. The Delaware was built in 1862 and sold in 1865. The revolver is complete with an American style mahogany case with red velvet lining and seven compartments. The top of the case has inlaid brass reinforcements on each corner an a scalloped, inlaid brass plate in the center. The case contains an empty 250 cap tin of Eley Bros. percussion caps for Colt's belt and pocket pistols, a key, four .36 caliber conical bullets, blue iron double cavity .36 caliber Colt bullet mold, copper fixed charger powder flask with eagle, shield and cannon embossed in relief on both sides, Colt L-shaped combination screwdriver/nipple wrench and American Powder Co., package of six combustible cartridges for navy pistols. This revolver was formerly in the world famous gun collection of William M. Locke and is pictured and described on page 468 of "THE WILLIAM M. LOCKE COLLECTION. The accessories were apparently added after the revolver left the Locke collection.

Very good. The revolver has a silver-gray patina overall. There are patches of age discoloration on the barrel and brass trigger guard. The presentation inscriptions are sharp but the serial number and Ordnance sub-inspection marks are faint. The relief carved pearl grips are very fine and show some dirt and age discoloration but no significant wear. The case is very good. Exterior wear is limited to a few minor handling marks. The red velvet lining is clean and unfaded; the only significant wear is compression marks from the revolver cylinder. The accessories are good overall; the cap tin has a faded darkened label, the bullet mold has 50% of the blue finish with numerous dents and handling marks, the flask has a dark patina with patches of black discoloration and a few minor dents and the cartridge packet has been opened and re-sealed with tape. This is a remarkable and unique presentation cased Whitney Second Model Navy revolver from the famous W.M. Locke collection.
