Historic Colt Model 1848 Baby Dragoon percussion revolver, .31 cal., 5” octagon barrel, blue and case hardened finish, silver plated grip straps displaying inscription on backstrap “Lieut. C. Bootes U.S.A.”, wood grips, #4233 in overall verygood to near fine condition showing a plum brown patina on the barrel assembly with areas of original blue mixed in, pleasing grey patina to cylinder with small spots of erosion and the majority of its original crisp cylinder scene ofTexas Rangers and Comanche Indians in mounted combat; considerable original muted case colors on the frame and hammer as well as approx. 90% original silver plating on the brass grip straps; the grips are in overall very good + conditionwith most of their original varnish remaining and displaying some old nicks and mars on the bottom of the grips and grip strap from tacking; all matching visible serial numbers including the barrel wedge and the cylinder arbor; the action is crisp, the markings are sharp and the bore is near fine; the inscription is finely accomplished and we concur with the opinion of noted Colt expert R.L. Wilson who states in a letter accompanying this lot “The inscription was likely
