This is an example of a Tower Flintlock Musket that is accompanied with documentation tying this piece to British General Sir Galbraith Lowry Cole. The musket has a 36 3/4 inch, 70 bore, pin fastened, barrel with brass front sight. The walnut stock has a plain oval apron surrounding the barrel tang and tear-drop carving at the rear of the flats. The musket has brass furniture that includes a brass nose cap, two Pratt's Improvement ramrod pipes, Short Land Pattern rounded side plate, trigger guard and buttplate. The double bridle lock plate has an integral fenced iron pan and goose-neck cock with curved, feather-shaped comb. The frizzenspring has a pointed finial. The lock plate has a engraved double-line border and is marked "TOWER" in a vertical curve behind the hammer and has the "Crown/GR" royal cypher in front of it. Iron sling swivels are mounted on the trigger guard finial and above the forward ramrod pipe. The top of the barrel is engraved with a unit marking: "CAVAN. M" and stamped "F7457". Faint proof and inspection marks are visible on the left side of the barrel near the breech. The left side of the butt is boldly branded "COLE" followed by an "L" stamped vertically. The right side of the stock is marked "CVII" reading from the lock toward the butt. The musket is accompanied by a number of documents that indicate the marking "COLE L" on the left side of the stock stands for Galbraith Lowry Cole, popularly known as Lowry Cole. General Sir Galbraith Lowry Cole (1772-1842) was a distinguished British Officer who served in the West Indies, Egypt, Sicily and commanded the 4th Division under the Duke of Wellington in Spain and Portugal. Cole was Colonel of the famous 27th (Inskilling) Regiment. He is known as the "Hero of Albuera", a crucial battle in the Peninsula War. Following the Napoleonic Wars, Cole served as the Governor of the island of Mauritius and the Governor of Cape Colony, S.A.. Information in the research indicates that the marking "CVII" appears to be the property mark of the County Cavan militia (County Cavan is a county in Ulster, Northern Ireland). Included with the musket is a rare portrait miniature on ivory of Cole in military dress, painted and signed by the listed British miniaturist, T.(Thomas) Day. Additional inclusions are a unit badge and button from the 48th Northamptionshire Regiment and a crest from the Royal Irish Rangers.
