High quality French Flintlock poaching gun signed “Berthon a Aix” lock with finely checkered and carved burl wood stock showing figure of hunting dog at butt. The barrel shows a brown lacquer or painted finish ofwhich 50-70% remains and where metal exposed gone to a dark patina. The lock and mounts show considerable original case hardening with at least 75% on lock that is still colorful. The mounts and lock show nicequality engraving of the empire style. The butt stock removes and reattaches with a key type fitting at the center of the wrist. The stock is in near fine condition with just some minor normal aging. A period type ramrod is included. The lock is in its original Flintlock configuration with correct small parts. From a distance the gun would look like a cane and when stock attached it would work as well as fowling piece. The gunmeasures 49-1/4” overall with 34” barrel of approx 20 gauge smooth bore. Last sold Richard K. Bourne auctioneer for James Elwood Jones collection 1981. From an old N.Y. collector’s estate.
