High quality American flintlock dueling pistol by B&J Cooper of New York. The pistol measures 15-1/4” overall with 9-7/8” medium to heavy weight octagon barrel. .62 caliber smoothbore, half-stocked in walnut with nicely checkered wrist and characteristic carved and spiral design butt. The pistol shows an engraved silver triggerguard, silver rear ferrule, silver escutcheons. The front ferrule is iron. The pistol shows double-platinum bands at breech and gold lined touch hole and pan. The barrel shows 50-60% of an original brown finish which is darkening and going to patina with some light erosion and minor nicks at the edges. The lock shows traces of case hardening within a deep brown patina.. The lock shows its original hammer and small parts. The stock is good to very good with some minor scratches and mars, just normal aging and a few small chips of wood missing around the lock. . The pistol is equipped with a set trigger and retains an original to the period horn-tipped ramrod. The silver plaque at the wrist is inscribed with the initials “JLH”.
