High grade double barrel pinfire shotgun by George Gibbs of Bristol England, two silver engraved plaques that are period inscribed. One mounted at center portion of right buttstock reads “Made Expressly for Maj. Genl. John Gibbon, USA”. A small circular silver plaque also inscribed “Big Hole August 9th, 1877” commemorating this officer’s victory in the famous Montana Indian Fight. The gun is pictured in Firearms of the American West: Volume 2 by Louis A. Garavaglia, Charles G. Worman. The gun is serial #B92 on the tang and show typical high grade English quality that Gibbs was noted for. 30” barrels, 12ga pinfire caliber, Damascus pattern, good traces of brown on barrels, and about 50% of the patterning remain. The locks are finely scroll engraved and show approx. 30-50% case hardening drifting to silver. The stocks show some wear from carry, small losses, generally very good overall. The action is good, the bores are good. The gun is signed on ribs and both locks. Major General Gibbon’s life have filled several volumes of books, to summarize, he was a Brigadier General during the Civil War noted for his bravery at Cold Harbor, and had a successful Indian-fighting
