High grade custom rifle on a Mauser action by “Griffin & Howe, Inc., New York, No. 35 in .300 Mag. (H&H). Plaque inlaid into the belly of the stock engraved in block letters “G.L.W. and originally made for “Capt. G.L. Wotkyns, OrdnanceDept., U.S. Army” who was a pioneer of wildcat cartridges and aided in the development and improvement of the .22 Hornet. See lot 238 for another G&H rifle which descended in the collection of Fred Huntington of R.C.B.S. whoobtained the captains arms in the 1950s. Included with this lot is a treasure trove of letters to Wotkyns and from Wotkyns to most of the significant firearms experts of the 1920s and 30s. Townsend Whelan, Elmer Keith, Sedgley, Knoble,Remington, and a letter dated 1944 to Huntington. Also a photo Wotkyns in the 1920s examining German artillery sight with letter to Huntington from the photographer dated 1956. This rifle shows a 25” barrel of slightly heavy weight, crispcheckered strait grain walnut stock with horn fore end cap, milled steel butt plate with trap for 2 cartridges and bore cleaner (Still present), Lyman receiver sight, and mounted for hook type sling swivels.
