This is an exceedingly rare original Herschell Spillman Company hand carved wooden carousel horse circa 1910 from the Balboa Park Carousel Menagerie adjacent to the San Diego Zoo. The horse is from circa Armitage Herschell Company was founded in 1873 who specialized in barrel-organ based products, suited for all ranges of fairground attractions. Due to financial complications Herschell left the company in 1900 and by 1901 formed the Herschell Spillman Company with his in-laws, the Spillmans. The factory started by carving and creating carousels in the old style and also created some large park machines, generally elaborate menagerie carousels. The Herschell Spillman menagerie carousels can be found in prominent places across American including Ocean City Maryland, Golden Gate Park San Francisco California, Greenfield Village near Detroit Michigan and Balboa Park in San Diego California. This piece is was made in New York in 1910 and shipped to Los Angeles, California. In 1915 the carousel was displayed at the summer resort called Tent City, in Coronado and then moved up to Balboa Park around 1922. The horse was an inside row piece as it has ornate carvings on the outside/right side with more plain carving on the inside/left side. The horse shows the original condition and the original paint. The piece has no major damage and displays wonderfully. This comes with a stand with barber carousel brass pole cover and round metal stand. This is truly a piece of history and one of the finest carousel horse that has been made available for public sale. The horse measures “H x “W x “D.
