Henry Model 1866 lever action rifle in .44 rim-fire caliber showing original early style scroll and floral engraving with deluxe Burl wood stock, serial number 2821 with excellent provenance as to being first recorded sold in the Charles D. Cook collection by Serven Gun Room in the early 1950s where pictured and listed as item number 931. This rifle was purchased by Mrs. George Ross of Glendale for a husband’s Christmas gift and was sold to Harold Ball in 1967 where he maintained it in his collection for more than 20 years then sold to another prominent California collector. The rifle remains in very good original condition with a pleasing and sharp un-cleaned brass frame showing well defined original engraving. The barrel shows a mellow light brown patina with traces of blue where protected. The barrel address is sharp and legible as is the serial number. The deluxe wood shows an old break and light refinishing long ago when repaired. The wood fits the metal nicely and is only slightly undersized. Harold Ball was an early Southern California Winchester collector who displayed at clubs and shows for more than 40 years. This rifle was a centerpiece of that collection and was admired by Little John for decades as to the exceptional quality and untouched original condition of the frame. Many letters of provenance from James Serven, Harold Ball and other collectors concerning this rifle are included along with a copy of the Cook collection catalog where it was first illustrated. Keith and Lori Candee Collection. Est.: $37,500-$75,000.
