Heavy barrel half stock plains rifle marked "C H Herbert, Albany" on barrel and "Rosswell & Steele warranted" on lock. The rifle is approximately .41 cal., with 34" heavy octagon barrel, 49-1/2" overall, the barrelmeasures 1" across the flats of the muzzle. The rifle shows engraved brass mounts, single non-set trigger, pewter forend cap and dual cheekpieces. The metal surfaces show a dark patina with some newer rust that may clean,scattered erosion and surface pitting most of which is minor; some slightly heavier pitting on the breech and heavy pitting on the right side of the barrel extending 7" back from the muzzle and on 2" of the leftside of barrel near the muzzle. The stock is good, with some minor losses, cracks, mars, normal aging. The rear sight is an old handmade replacement, the nipple is a modern replacement; the action is good, a woodramrod is included.
