Heavy barrel half stock percussion plains type rifle with barrel marked “C.H. Herbert, Albany” and “Rosswell & Steele warranted” on the lock. The rifle is approximately .41 caliber with 34” heavy octagon barrel and 49 ½” overall. The barrelmeasures approximately 1” across the flats of the muzzle edge to edge. The rifle shows engraved brass mounts, single trigger, pewter forend cap and dual cheek pieces on left and right along with checkered wrist and one simple German silverinlay. The metal surfaces show some light rust and a good patina. The action works well and the nipple is replaced. The rear sight is an oversized handmade V notch of the period and the front sight is a handmade small blade. The stock showssome minor damage and small repairs but is generally good. A wooden ramrod of a later date is included and the ramrod ferrules show some re-soldering. Just the type rifle that would’ve went West in the 1850s era. Est.: $350-$700
