For your Consideration is this 1894 illustrated edition of “Headwaters of the Mississippi” by Willard Glazier, publisher Rand, McNally & Company, Chicago and New York. Captain Willard Glazier (1841-1905) led an expedition in 1881 that discovered the "True Head" of the Mississippi. Previous efforts by others had failed or unknowingly fell short. In 1832, another explorer had discovered Lake Itasca, thinking it was the source. Indian tribes in the area denied the assertion. Glazier discovered another lake lying to the south of Itasca, at a higher elevation, that fed into Lake Itasca. This lake now bears Glazier's name. The book is illustrated throughout with drawings, maps, and even the first photographs taken of the area by another on the expedition. The blue cloth bound gold and silver gilt stamped illustrated hardcover is in nice condition, front cover gilt is bright, spine gilt is fading. Front cover illustration depicts lakes Glazier and Itasca and tributaries along with the Mississippi river in silver gilt, title and map compass rose in gold gilt. Intact pages exhibit age tanning and slight foxing throughout. Measures 1lb, 14oz.
