Hand Carved Calamity Jane Tree Trunk Statue c 1960
Featured in this lot is this hand carved Calamity Jane tree trunk statue circa 1960's. The carving features a wonderfully and professionally crafted tree stump construction that shows a portrait design of Calamity Jane with good attention to details and captures her likeness well showing a pendant around her neck and a cigar in her mouth with a hat on her head; the piece features a plaque on the front that reads 'Calamity Jane'. Martha Jane Cannary (May 1, 1852 – August 1, 1903), better known as Calamity Jane, was an American frontiers woman, sharpshooter, and raconteur. In addition to many exploits she was known for being an acquaintance of Wild Bill Hickok. Late in her life, she appeared in Buffalo Bill's Wild West show and at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition. She is said to have exhibited compassion to others, especially to the sick and needy. This facet of her character contrasted with her daredevil ways and helped to make her a noted frontier figure. She was also known for her habit of wearing men's attire. The condition of this carving is good with some natural fissures shows to the wood but otherwise shows good overall condition. The measurements of this carving is 21 3/4" x 16" x 9".
