Hammered Iron Broad Axe circa 19th Century
For your consideration is this hammered iron broad axe, circa 19th century. A broad axe is a large- headed axe. There are two categories of cutting edge on broad axes, both of which are used for shaping logs by hewing. On one type, one side is flat and the other side beveled, a basilled edge, also called a side axe, single bevel, or chisle-edged axe. The condition of this axe is good for its age, with no obvious signs of damage to the blade and slight wear to the haft. The axe shows oxidation to the head and a slight patina to the wood the haft is constructed from. The measurements of this broad axe are 24" x 7" x 1".
