Half stocked percussion plains rifle marked “W. Beck” on barrel who was an Oregon Territory maker born Nov. 2, 1817, in Bucks County, PA and arrived in Oregon in 1852. He was the son of famous gunmaker, ChristianBeck and moved West and opened a shop in Portland where he became well-recognized and constructed a bridge across the Willamette River at Portland. The rifle measures 50” overall with 34” heavy round barrel andapprox. .45 caliber measuring 1-1/8” across the center of the muzzle. The rifle shows iron mounts, double set triggers and an iron patchbox; buckhorn type rear sight and blade front sight. The appearance is similar to aHawken rifle with iron trigger guard and butt plate. The condition is very good with an even brown patina on metal just slight erosion and minor aging. The stock is also very good with normal wear, slightimperfections and aging. The hammer is possibly an old period replacement which is handmade. We have only seen 3 Oregon-made plains rifles of the 1850’s era in over 42 years of selling antique arms in the Western
