Born in New York and raised in Wisconsin, William Strong had just passed the bar exam when he heard of the incident at Fort Sumter and the start of the Civil War. Joining the fight as soon as possible, Strong raised F Company of the Second Wisconsin Infantry, and served as it's Captain during the Battle of Blackburn's Ford and First Bull Run. Following those battles, he was promoted to Major in the 12th Wisconsin, a part of the Army of the Tennessee, where he would spend the remainder of his war service, which included the honor of raising the Union Flag over the battlements of Vicksburg on July 4, 1863, the climax of the Vicksburg Campaign and a critical turning point in the war. Leaving the service as a Brevet Brigadier General, Strong established his practice in Chicago, where he also spent a term as Commander of the Loyal Legion. This lot consists of a collection of photo cards of the General, depicting him at the ages of 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 26, 35 and 39, along with a pair of undated photos. Each card is set into a paper frame, which have notes of his then-current rank and assignments. A few cards have visible backs, with the markings of M.M Melander & Bro of East Ohio Street, Chicago. Also included are a pair of protective covers, with raised floral patterns on the leather exteriors
