Dan Richey - Chainsaw Artist (Nanaimo, BC)
Dan Richey is a professional chainsaw carver and mural artist based in Nanaimo, British Columbia, known for transforming large cedar logs and standing trees into highly detailed West Coast wildlife sculptures. Originally moving to B.C. in 1994, he began chainsaw carving in 1999 after earlier work in oil painting and commercial window art.

Richey's work is recognized across Vancouver Island and throughout B.C., with numerous public installations and private commissions. His carvings often feature eagles, orcas, dolphins, wolves, and other Pacific Northwest themes, executed with strong anatomical accuracy and dynamic motion. He has earned multiple carving awards, and his pieces are frequently highlighted in regional media for their scale and craftsmanship.

Notable public works include:

"Sights and Sounds" (2008) - a full-wrap mural at the Brechin Boat Ramp pavilion.

"Underwater Fantasy" (2005) - a marine-life mural formerly installed in Maffeo Sutton Park.

Dungeness Crab (2013) - a large sculptural installation formerly on Nanaimo's waterfront.

Richey is also known for large-scale residential commissions, including multi-figure carvings created from standing cedar trees-such as a dramatic eight-metre bald eagle in flight, carved directly from a homeowner's tree and widely covered by local news.

Today, he works under his studio name Dan's Art and Soul, continuing to produce custom carvings, murals, and public artworks throughout Vancouver Island.
