Gouache in black and white of “The Sundance” signed lower left De Cost Smith. 15”x20” in fine condition recently framed, cleaned and matted. De Cost Smith was born in New York in 1864 and died 1939. He studied at AcademicJulian in Paris. He grew up near Skaneateles in Western New York where he became well acquainted and initialed into the Gnondaga Tribe. He traveled to Dakota Territory in 1884 where he created articles andillustrations for outdoor magazines. He worked with Edward Willard Deming and was well regarded for his works portraying authentic Native American Culture. Few white men were allowed to see the secret ceremonial rituals of the Sundance.
