Good quality Spanish officer’s type transition rapier, circa 1660 to 1720. Measuring approx. 44” overall with 37-1/2” blade. The broad blade measures approx. 1-1/4” across widest part of ricasso. The quillons measure 12-5/8” across. The semi-cup hilt is chiseled with a Spanish lion and birds and shows faint traces of gold gilt. The blade is hand engraved in Spanish “Draw me not without reason/ Sheath me not without honor” and shows engraved borders and typical motif with unidentifiable cipher or letter. The sword is in good to very good original condition and shows a copper-wire wrap to the grip. The sword has had some slight cleaning and shows dark patina on the interior edges. There is a good maker’s mark on the rear portion of the blade that we could not identify. The blade shows some light to moderate pitting and erosion and the hilt shows some minor pitting and erosion on the interior of the guard. The pommel nut is undisturbed and the sword is completely original and authentic to the period. Just the type transition rapier that would be carried by a mounted Spanish officer in the new world. One of the best we have examined in a long while, from a top sword collector. Est: $2,000 -
