Ghost Dance Polychrome Painted Dance Shirt c. 1890
The lot features a fantastic authentic Ghost Dance polychrome painted muslin dance shirt from circa 1890. The shirt shows a muslin trade fabric make with hand cut fringe along the arms and is decorated with mineral pigment dye paints in browns / red and yellows. The front of the shirt shows a “v” cut neck with five-point red / brown star with yellow circle center having borders of red/brown, blue and yellow. The back of the shirt shows a half moon red / brown ghost dance symbol with blue outline along with a red brown painted cape and yellow star, accents, and spots. Authentic Ghost Dance polychrome painted shirts are immensely rare with many examples being attributed to the Sioux Native American Indians, likely the origins of this piece as well. Some of the notable shirts of the same age and Ghost Dance origin as this piece include the example sold at Cowan’s April 2018 sale for $22,000, The shirt from Allard’s March 2003 sale for $7,500 and this example. This piece was previously found to be an authentic circa 1890 Ghost Dance Indian example by the experts at High Noon Western Americana Auctions and was listed in their January 2013 sale with a value of $3,500. The piece measures 32” x 49” and comes on a custom made museum display.
