German Wheelock pistol, circa 1600-1650, restocked and finely and richly ornamented in the 19th century, probably by Spitzer or other master European craftsman. The gun is approximately .54 cal. smooth bore, with 17"barrel, 25-1/2" overall, the lock and barrel of military origin and show Suhl type proofs at center breech and left flat of barrel. The wheel lock mechanism is intact, and metal surfaces show some light to moderate pitting and erosion. The stock shows bone ivory inlays, abalone inlays, pearl inlays with fantastic carved elephant ivory butt cap, a large plaque inlaid on left side of stock and ivory forend cap showing horned demon. Thestock shows figures of dragons, birds, beasts, man's head, and other figures surrounded by floral accents, line decoration and small geometrics. The ivory butt cap is beautifully carved with the face of alaughing man, the plaque in the stock shows a helmeted knight in armor, with cannon and castle in background. The stock is in very good+ to near fine condition, with a small loss around the back edge of the lock where
