George Armstrong Custer was one of the most famous and controversial Union cavalry officers of the American Civil War.

Key facts about Custer:

Born December 5, 1839, in New Rumley
Graduated last in his West Point class in 1861
Became a brigadier general at only 23 years old
Commanded the Michigan Cavalry Brigade during the Civil War
Played an important role at the Battle of Gettysburg, especially at East Cavalry Field
Known for aggressive cavalry charges, flamboyant uniforms, and long blond hair
Later commanded the 7th Cavalry in the American Indian Wars
Killed in 1876 at the Battle of the Little Bighorn

During the Civil War, many Union soldiers viewed Custer as fearless and charismatic. Historians generally agree he was an effective cavalry commander in fast-moving combat, though also reckless and highly ambitious.

Modern views of Custer are mixed because of his later campaigns against Native American tribes and the circumstances surrounding Little Bighorn. Recent historical discussions increasingly emphasize Native American perspectives on those conflicts.

The sculpture you mentioned by Francis J. Barnum likely depicts Custer in his Civil War-era general’s uniform rather than his later frontier buckskins.
