Gangs of New York Battle Weapons
Among the many elements of Scorsese’s astonishing “Gangs of New York” (2002) were the battles between to the enemy gangs “The Natives”, and “The Dead Rabbits”. These were the days when no one carried a gun, basically because they couldn’t afford it, and also because in a strange way they followed an “ancient rule of warfare”, in which battles were determined by a “fair and equitable fight”. Here is a screen used set of two of these weapons. A police “short stick” and home-made knuckle-buster. The knuckle buster has three-pronged knife points fashioned on a leather hand holder to make punches to their enemy that much more deadly. The buster is made of real leather with brass back rivets, and the teeth faux-steel, made of leather, painted silver to simulate steel. It also comes with a long piece of rawhide to tie to one’s pants. The “short stick” is crafted of rubber with excellent detailing to simulate wood and metal binding with screws, and comes with a rawhide holding loop. Both were used by a stuntman gang member in the action battle scenes. (The knuckle buster is approx 4.5x3”, and the short stock is 14” long)
