Offered for your bidding pleasure is this Early Gamblers Poker Set With Quarter Sawn Oak Box dating to the 19th Century. Some historians say poker’s origins can be traced to a domino-card game played by a 10th-century Chinese emperor; others claim it is a descendant of the Persian card game “As Nas,” which dates back to the 16th century. Poker’s closest European predecessor was Poque, which caught on in France in the 17th century. French colonists brought Poque to their settlements in North America, including New Orleans and the surrounding area, which became part of the United States thanks to the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. English-speaking settlers in the region Anglicized Poque to poker and adopted features of the modern game, including five cards for each player and (by 1834) a 52-card deck. It didn't take long for this game to sweep the nation. The set includes all early fantastic Bakelite construction with a nice swirl with colors such as 100 red chips, 150 yellow chips, and 50 green poker chips. This set comes encased in a wonderful Quarter Sawn Oak box with the original skeleton key and a beautiful finish. This pristine set also includes two decks of cards from the early 1900's, a nude women gambling playing card set as well as a Tiger Brand playing card set. This lot shows excellent condition and unique chips. The box measures 12" wide, 7" deep, 5" tall.
