SUGAR NIPS OR CUTTERS, USED FOR CUTTING A PIECE OF SUGAR FROM A BLOCK, OR LOAF OF SUGAR IN THE DAYS BEFORE GRANULATED SUGAR. THEY ARE SPRUNG FOR EASE OF USE. THE PIECE OF METAL AT THE BOTTOM HINGE ALSO ALLOWED A BETTER GRIP WHILST CUTTING THE SUGAR, WHICH WAS NOT AN EASY JOB. THE SHARP BLADES WERE USED TO BREAK OFF PIECES OF COMPRESSED SUGAR CONES BEFORE BEING POUNDED BY A MORTAR INTO FINER PIECES. SUGAR LOAVES WERE REPLACED BY GRANULATED SUGAR IN THE LATE 19TH CENTURY, RENDERING NIPPERS OBSOLETE.
