The Francis Barnum sculpture of George Gordon Meade is a Civil War collectible pewter piece honoring the Union general best known for commanding the Army of the Potomac at the Battle of Gettysburg.

HISTORY:
Meade was born in 1815 in Cádiz, Spain, where his father was working as an American merchant and government agent. After returning to the United States, he attended the United States Military Academy at West Point and graduated in 1835.

Early military career

Before the Civil War, Meade:

Served briefly in the Army
Worked as a civil engineer and surveyor
Returned to military service later as an engineer officer

He fought in the:

Mexican–American War (1846–1848)
Various engineering and coastal defense assignments afterward
Civil War service

When the Civil War began in 1861, Meade stayed loyal to the Union and rose steadily through the ranks because of his competence and discipline.

He served in several major battles including:

Antietam
Fredericksburg
Chancellorsville
Gettysburg

Meade is most famous for the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863.

Important facts about Gettysburg:

He took command of the Army of the Potomac only three days before the battle
Confederate General Robert E. Lee had invaded Pennsylvania
Meade organized Union defenses across strong high-ground positions around Gettysburg

After three days of fighting:

The Union Army defeated Lee’s forces
Lee retreated back to Virginia
Gettysburg became one of the major turning points of the Civil War
Later war years

After Gettysburg:

Meade continued commanding the Army of the Potomac
He worked alongside General Ulysses S. Grant during the final campaigns against Lee
Although Grant became more publicly famous, Meade remained an important operational commander
Personality and reputation

Meade was known for:

Intelligence and professionalism
A quick temper (earning the nickname “Old Snapping Turtle”)
Careful, defensive-minded leadership

Unlike some Civil War generals, he avoided self-promotion and often received less public attention than others.

Death and legacy

Meade died in 1872 in Philadelphia.

Today he is remembered as:

The Union general who won at Gettysburg
A skilled but often underappreciated commander
One of the key military leaders who helped preserve the Union during the Civil War
