Full stock percussion plains rifle by W. S. Hawken, showing pierced patchbox, period repaired wrist, light incise carving on left buttstock, cheekpiece inlaid with American eagle on shield. The rifle measures 55”overall, with 40” barrel of medium weight and approx. .42 caliber rifled. W. S. Hawken was the son of Sam Hawken and was raised in the gunsmithing trade. He purchased the Hawken shop from his father in 1853 and declaredbankruptcy in 1857. He continued gunmaking in St. Louis until 1859 when he moved to Denver. The rifle is in good to very good original condition showing grey brown original patina finish, some scattered lightto moderate erosion and pitting, and a few areas of heavier pitting on the barrel from exposure. The gun is fitted with a golcher lock that is slightly undersized and is most probably an old period replacement. The woodshows old repairs, particularly at the wrist where it shows a brass screwed down repair from where the wrist was broken. Shows great patina. A pierced patchbox also shows a dark patina.
