French musket by St. Etienne Arsenal now identified as U.S. model 1795 with U.S. surcharge or markings at the rear of lock and .69 caliber smoothbore with iron mountings. The metal surfaces show a dark brown patina finish with somescattered light to moderate erosion and pinprick pitting. The top jaw and screw are old replacements. The metal is in good overall condition and the stock shows a considerable restoration to the wrist with some small dings, mars, losses and replacement of wood behind the lock which is neatly done. The stock shows initials W.S.P. carved on the right side. Recently military experts have determined that the French supplied arms and parts to the United Statesbefore there was a national Armory and these U.S. surcharge French muskets were post-Revolutionary war and assembled by contractors in the early Federal period. William A. Gary collection consigned by his estate. Est.: $3,000-$6,000
