The lot features an early French blacksmith crafted pipe tomahawk dating to circa early 1800 and attributed to be used by the Iroquois or Mohawk Native American Indians. The forged head features a nicely faceted bowl, rounded chevrons over the eye hole and smoothly curved blade. The solid ash wood haft is adorned with a wrap of old copper wire, brass trade tacks and a few wraps of old trade clothe. The forged pipe tomahawk head shows a small French fleur-di-lis hallmark symbol punch stamped into both sides of the blade, indicative of French manufacture. The piece was collected from a large Eastern Woodlands large private collection of materials and is very similar to an example seen in the Peterson tomahawk book and also similar to an example shown in the Hartzler & Knowles book. The tomahawk shows an overall good condition for its early age. The piece also shows two piece of Indian tanned hide fringe holding two dew claws. Measures overall 21"L with a head that is 6.5"L x 2.5" across the balde.
