French Napoleonic cast bronze naval rail-gun with military issue markings and period replacement flintlock mechanism signed H. Nock. The gun measures 38” from the muzzle to end. The barrel portion measures 23” and is approximately 2” across the bore. The center portion of the tube is mounted with an iron swivel made to mounted on a ships rail. The center portion of the barrel is engraved “Captain Barton R.N. 1805”. The raised area which contains the flintlock mechanism was fired by a pull lanyard shows marking Brezin A Paris An.13 (1813). The brass bodied flintlock mechanism shows a stamping H. Nock with steel hammer and frizzen marked with dye stamp and typical English construction to this lock. The trunions are marked number 92 on right and P. D. 44 ½ on the left. This very interesting Napoleonic era ships gun was a favorite of legendary collector Hugh Hayes and was in his gun room located in Stockton, California. Mr. Hayes and his wife Mary Ann were active buyers in the auction rooms of England during the late 1940s to early 1960s. This gun was acquired by them from auction and may be identifiable from an old catalog. Mr. Hayes related to me directly that this gun was a capture piece that was refitted and reissued at least twice which the dates, names, and combination of English maker on the flintlock mechanism and French arsenal marks would indicate along with the Captain Barton name on barrel. The condition is very good with pleasing patina and visible original markings. The iron forged mounts show pitting and deep patina as one would expect from naval use. An important gun that may have researchable and interesting Napoleonic battle history. Est.: $14,000-$28,000.
