Frederic Remington Original Pen & Ink c. 1890
This is an outstanding original pen and ink drawing which is titled “A Mountain Man” by Frederic Remington and dated 1890. The piece shows a pen and ink sketch drawing of an early Mountain Man of the West which is signed in the lower right “FREDERIC REMINGTON ‘90”. Frederic Sackrider Remington (1861-1909) was an American painter, illustrator, sculptor and writer specialized in the depictions of the American Old West and is considered one of America’s most important western artist. Upon close examination of the piece the signature and style is identical to other pieces done by Remington during the 1890’s. Frederic Remington has many works in pen and ink and many depicting the early Mountain Men of the West, such as the piece also titled “A Mountain Man” which sold at Skinner Inc. for $48,000 in 2013, very similar to the mountain man and his horses and “American, Mexican, and French Pioneer Types” done in 1891 in the Amon Carter Museum of American Art collection. The signature is identical to the piece titled, “At the Mouth of Rapid Creek – General Carr” done in 1890 and sold by Scottsdale Art Auction in April 2019 and valued at $125,000. The artwork offered in this lot shows the mountain man looking the left of the artist with rich burly beard and feathered fur cap. Provenance: The piece was collected at an old estate in New Hampshire at their auction and later purchased by the current owner in 2000, an avid Art collector in New York. Upon purchasing the piece in 2000 the piece was heavily toned with spots of foxing in poor condition in a mat that was marked, “a mountain man” (written by hand in graphite in cursive similar to that of Remington’s own). The piece was then taken to West Lake Conservators of Skaneatles, New York in 2001 to be professionally preserved. Overall the piece shows a nice preserved condition with some foxing in the upper right corner. The frame is done professionally with museum quality glass and acid free matting. The visible art area measures 10.5”x8.5” and the frame measures 24”x21”. A typed letter from the collector including the items provenance and a slip referring to the works preservation is on the back. The piece is strongly believed to be an authentic original, please examine the piece in person or send a proxy. The item has not at this point been added to the known lifetime works by the Frederic Remington Art Museum. Please bid accordingly upon your own investigation of the piece as it is currently an unconfirmed work.
