The lot features an original silver albumen boudoir card from F.J. Haynes of Chinaman Geyser in Yellowstone National Park during the 19th Century. The piece is marked on the front, “3619 Chinaman Geyser” and on the back, “Boudoir Views Our Collection of Views in this Popular Size Embraces Scenery Along the Entire Line of the Northern Pacific, Including Yellowstone, National Park – Clark’s Fork and Columbia River, Mt. Hood, Mt. Tacoma and Pacific Coast, Montana, Wyoming, Dakota, Etc. Descriptive Catalogue Free. Photographed by Published by F. Jay Haynes Official Photographer N. P. R. R. Fargo, Dakota” as well as being stamped, “F. JAY HAYNES. PHOTOGRAPHER YELLOWSTONE PARK”. The silver albumen photograph shows the Chinaman Geyser. The geyser has been renamed the Chinese Spring Geyser, it received its name on account of its early use by Chinese laborers as a laundry. The image shows two men standing next to the erupting geyser. Provenance: From the personal collection of Francoise Perriot (Françoise Perriot), noted historian author of the West and Native Americans. Perriot’s published works include such books as “Les Indiens et La Nature” (Indians and Nature) 2017, “La Conquête du Far West” (The Conquest of the Wild West) 2007, “Les Indiens d'Amérique du Nord” (North American Indians), “Guide Bleu : Etats-Unis Ouest Americain” (Blue Guide: United States West America). This piece and others come from her time collecting in Montana and the West, her book “Les Indiens et la nature” is one of the most notable in France documenting photographs of the west. The lot includes the original boudoir silver albumen photograph that is about 8.5” by 5.25”.
