Framed pen and ink sketch, signed by prominent Western artist Olaf Wieghorst, presented and dated 1960, showing desert trails and desert home, “to Helen and Dick Nelson” who were close friends and known collectors. Shows the “OW” initials and 2Cbrand; approx. 12-1/2” x 9”, nicely framed and matted. Also, the paper sheet has other sketches on the back showing cowboys, chuck wagon and horses. Olaf Wieghorst was America’s foremost Western artist in his lifetime who had a long andstellar career in Western art. He was originally a child acrobat and performer in his native homeland of Sweden and became enamored with the West when he snuck under the tent to view Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. He immigrated to Americain the early 1900’s and became a top Cavalry soldier stationed along the Texas and New Mexico borders during the Mexican Revolution in the 1915-1920 era. Widghorst was especially talented in trick riding and had a magnificent gift fordealing with horses, which he carried to New York City where he became a policeman in charge of handling mounts for the New York Mounted Police.
