Included with this lot is a letter (in German) dated 5 March 1934, on letterhead from the "HAUS DOORN" (Doorne Manor), with the seal and signature of the Kaiser's Chamberlain, addressed to one Harry Hill of Flint, Michigan. In translation, this letter is a response to Mr. Hill, who gave Wilhelm a vintage section from a 1858 copy of the Illustrated London News containing pictures from the marriage of his parents, Frederick III and Victoria, Princess Royal, and as a token of appreciation the Kaiser was giving to Mr. Hill a signed picture of himself. The black and white picture measures 3 inches wide and 4 3/4 inches tall, depicting the Kaiser in a martial uniform, with 4 crosses and 2 ribbons on his chest, as well as a pair of fancy braided shoulder boards. In the lower left corner is a faint signature, and the picture is set with cream-colored matting in a gold painted wood frame, measuring 7 1/4 inches wide and 9 5/8 inches tall. Kaiser Wilhelm II, the Last King of Germany and Emperor of Prussia, went into exile in 1918, and spent the remainder of his life in the Netherlands, establishing his home at Doorne Manor, and is there interred in accordance with his wishes to never return to Germany before the restoration of the monarchy.
