Flintlock trade musket by W. Chance & Son showing fox and tombstone marking with IA on both lock and barrel with brass serpentine sideplate. The gun measures 45-1/2” overall with nearly 30” barrel approx. .60 calibersmoothbore. The gun shows six tacks on right side, five tacks on left side, one missing (each were placed in three sets of two). The gun is in very good condition showing some light pitting and erosion. Exceptionally good stock with a few scratches, marks, opening around the pin holes, one or two gouges, but exceptionally crisp for this type trade gun and remaining in its original flintlock configuration. The markings are sharp, stamps clear. The patina is untouched. A letter from John S. duMont describes this trade musket as coming out of an Indian pueblo in New Mexico. The letter is dated 26 January 1975. John S. duMont was one of America’sforemost collectors who wrote about the Custer battlefield and Indian guns in the 1950’s. He was a pioneer collector in this field. Est: $4,000 - $8,000
