Flintlock single shot pistol, .50 cal., period shortened to 6-1/4” brass barrel, wood stock, brass mountings, lockplate marked “B. Homer”. This gun is pictured in the book, “The American Martial Flintlock 1760-1845” by Smith & Bitter on pages 34 & 35 and was previously in the J.M. Wertenberger collection. In this book, it is stated that Homer was born in Yarmouth, Mass. on August 5, 1731 and died March 30, 1776; he was asuccessful merchant and ship owner in Boston before the Revolution and that his brother, John Homer, was a member of the “Sons of Liberty”; it is further opined by Smith & Bitter that the locks may have been importedor made at the Homer factory as there were several British and American makers with the same name however, the pistol is typical of those made in New England during the 1770s and 1780s with the style English, but thesimplicity of the design embellishments typical of New England pieces from that time.
