Flintlock dueling pistol marked “F.D. Poyas, Charleston S.C.” .50 caliber smoothbore, 11-1/4” medium weight octagon barrel, 16-1/2” overall, half stocked, squared iron guard. Checkered wrist, nicely engraved lock and mounts. The barrel shows a deep brown patina. The lock is a grayish brown patina. The metal surfaces show light to moderate scattered erosion and pitting, some slightly heavier pitting around the touch hole area, but generally good metal surfaces. The lock is in its original flintlock configuration with its original small parts. The stock shows numerous dings and mars, indentations, dents, small losses, general wear from carry and use. There are a couple of stress cracks, but near good overall. An original to the period horn tipped ramrod that has warped is included. There has been a small repair to the screw that holds the frizzen by replacing it with a pin during period of use. The lock shows other period repairs to the mechanism. A good early southern pistol that appears to have been in service and carried and use for a long time, possibly by several owners within the same family. From the William R. Orbelo Collection.
