First Model Springfield rifle, .45-70 cal., serial #28701, showing authentic to-the-western-period brass tacked stock, in frontier hard used condition. The metal surfaces show a deep brown patina, scattered light to heavy pitting, stocksare well worn with exposure to the elements; the rear sight was removed long ago. There is a unit #48 engraved at the breech and NJ state markings at the breech; there is a small shield shaped plaque "Co E6" with large numeral 3 on left rearof butt stock. The butt plate is heavily pitted and worn, tacks show a good patina and wear and are of the right period. The action is good, the bore is very rough. Formerly Lew Wight collection who displayed it as used on The Little Big Horn,but no information available at time of cataloging, and Mr. Wight passed away nearly 20 years ago. Est.: $900-$1,800
