First Across The Continent 1902 First Edition
This is a First Edition of "First Across the Continent: the Story of the Lewis and Clark Expedition" by Noah Brooks, published October 1901, 1902 printing, Charles Scribner's Sons, New York. This book features 365 historical pages nicely enhanced by black and white illustrations and a fold-out map. The story of the expedition of Lewis and Clark is one of surpassing interest. From the Preface, "These men, with their faithful followers, were the first white men who crossed the continent of North America between the regions occupied by the Spanish and those of the people of English descent. They were the first to explore the valleys of the Upper Missouri, the Yellowstone, and the Columbia and its tributaries. Many of the red men who inhabited those pathless wildernesses looked for the first time on pale-faces when they saw these adventurous discoverers." The vivid accounts are based largely on the Nicholas Biddle history of the Expedition. Brooks was assisted by the notes written in the margins of his manuscript by Dr. Elliott Coues, who had edited the 1894 edition of Biddle, and who had wide experience as an explorer of the American West. The green coloured cloth bound gold gilt stamped hardcover is in nice condition, black and brown artwork of a Bison head on the cover and a tipi on the spine. Scuffing exhibited on cover edges, intact pages exhibit age tanning. Measures 5.5"W x 8"L x 1.5"D, weight 1lb, 14oz.
