Firefox (1982) - Conning Tower and Diorama Display.

An extraordinary, museum-quality piece of Cold War cinematic history, this is the original production-used submarine conning tower and weather station diorama display from the high-stakes arctic refueling sequence in Clint Eastwood’s techno-thriller 'Firefox' (1982)

Custom-built by the legendary, Academy Award-winning visual effects studio Apogee Productions, Inc., this masterfully crafted scale model set was vital in bringing to life the tense sequence where Captain Mitchell Gant (Eastwood) lands the stolen Soviet MiG-31 aircraft on the frozen arctic shelf to rendezvous with a hidden American submarine.

Constructed with meticulous attention to detail under the guidance of special effects titan Grant McCune, the diorama is built upon a large, hand-carved styrofoam terrain base masterfully painted and textured to replicate the stark, unforgiving expanse of packed snow drifts and impacted arctic ice.

The primary centerpiece of the display is a highly detailed submarine conning tower, fabricated from a heavy-duty fiberglass shell layered over a sturdy wooden armature support system. The deck of the tower features two articulated miniature sailor figures bundled in hand-tailored, cold-weather fabric parkas.

Consisting of 30 x 30 x 2.5 in. square base of carved Styrofoam representing arctic snow. Fiberglass shell on wooden armature 18.5 x 13 in. expertly painted submarine conning tower breaking through the surface of the ice and with 2-minature sailors in parkas on deck. Also, a hexagonal 18 in x 9.5 in. tent constructed from lead with wire rigging and 6.5 in. foam latex and resin figure. Weather station antennae fabricated from wire and cast resin components standing 14 in. tall. Retaining display placard attached to the surface reading, "Conning tower with weather station miniature from Firefox, 1982. Made by Apogee Productions, Inc. Provenance: The collection of Grant McCune.

The cast also includes Freddie Jones, Kenneth Colley, Warren Clarke, and Nigel Hawthorne.
