Finely made custom badge, probably by jeweler, silver shield body overlaid with fine gold banner and letters, with central star. Badge measures 2-1/2" in height by 1-3/4" at widest point of shield base, banner at top is hand engraved "S. Birchfield", the word "Deputy" is very hand cut-out in gold and affixed to the silver body, with appliqued star and "Sheriff Cochise County"; the background of the shield is very finelyhand engraved and is a presentation quality badge in every respect. This badge was discovered in Arizona in 2002 by the late prominent collector Johnny Woodard who was recognized as one of America's top collectors for over half a century. Mr. Woodard's research indicates that Birchfield had an interesting and long career as a Sheriff and was in the posse that chased Blackjack Ketchum out of the country. Birchfield isshown in an Arizona Historical Society reproduction photograph in this posse with other notables such as Charles Ballard and S. Fly of Tombstone fame and is pictured in this photograph wearing a fancy engraved
